Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, is one of Hinduism's holiest cities and among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Adding it to the Golden Triangle circuit gives a spiritual, very different close to a trip built mostly around Mughal history.
A short flight connects Delhi (or Agra/Jaipur) to Varanasi, where the highlights are the ghats along the river — best experienced at sunrise by boat, and again at sunset for the Ganga Aarti fire ceremony.
