Sunrise, sunset, or full moon

Sunrise entry (the gates open around 30 minutes before official sunrise) gives you cooler air, a thinner crowd, and the marble's slow shift from grey to gold — this is the visit most photographers ask for by name. Sunset trades the early wake-up for warmer light and a calmer 4–6pm window. Full moon viewing is the rarest option: it's open only five nights a month, capped at a small number of visitors, and needs to be booked days in advance.

Getting to Agra from Delhi

Most same-day visitors travel from Delhi, either by private car via the Yamuna Expressway (roughly 3–3.5 hours each way) or by the Gatimaan/Shatabdi Express trains (under 2 hours). A car gives you flexibility to stop at Mathura or Fatehpur Sikri; the train is faster and better suited to an early-morning or evening return.

• By private car: door-to-door pickup, flexible stops, ideal for families and small groups.
• By express train: fastest option, best for a tight one-day schedule from Delhi.
• Overnight in Agra: the only way to catch both sunrise and sunset in one trip.

The Mughal history behind the marble

The Taj Mahal was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and took roughly two decades to complete. Its white marble is inlaid with semi-precious stone — jasper, carnelian, lapis lazuli — in a technique called pietra dura, and the whole complex is built on a strict geometric symmetry that repeats in the gardens, the reflecting pools, and the two flanking red-sandstone buildings. A guide who can point out the calligraphy that grows in scale toward the top of each archway, to correct for viewing distance, turns a photo stop into something closer to reading the building.

Getting the shot without the crowd

The front reflecting pool is the classic view and also the most crowded. Mehtab Bagh, the garden directly across the Yamuna River, gives an uninterrupted view of the Taj with almost no one in frame — best around sunset. The Taj Nature Walk offers a quieter side-angle approach, and several rooftop cafés in Taj Ganj give an elevated view without needing a drone (which is not permitted near the monument).

Practical things to know

• Entry fees: around ₹1,100 for foreign nationals and ₹50 for Indian citizens; the main mausoleum carries a small additional fee.
• Security: only small clear bags and phones/cameras are allowed inside; food, tripods, and power banks over a certain size are restricted.
• Dress code: no official rule, but modest, breathable clothing is recommended, and shoe covers are provided at the mausoleum entrance.
• Closed on Fridays: the Taj Mahal is closed to tourists every Friday for prayers at the on-site mosque.
